The Five
Rights of Effective Clinical Informatics Implementation Effective
Clinical Informatics Implementation depends on clear objectives for the
initiative. The objectives are best expressed as clearly articulated and
measurable outcomes. Once efforts are focused, it becomes
clearer which data is needed to achieve the outcomes, how to best
present the data, where there are opportunities for rules to assist in
good decision-making, and how changes in work processes can take
advantage of the new tools available to clinicians. Commonly,
some or all of these Rights are omitted, with resulting dilution of
efforts. The
key step is to verify that implementation has achieved the desired Outcomes.
When results are sub-optimal, repeat the same sequence of steps. As
important is the opportunity to revisit these issues after the users are fully
facile with the system. Often, users
will have new insights after they have incorporated a new way of working
into their experience. Small tweaks can make
huge improvements in productivity at this point because most of the hard
work has already been done!
Start the process by defining the Right Outcomes.
